Bottom Line

This Ibis hotel opened in 2014 is no-frills even by the chain's usual stripped-down standards, with a business park location on the western fringe of Edinburgh. However, the budget property is modern and bright with just enough essentials to make for a comfortable overnight stay. The 161 rooms are clean but small with few amenities, and bathroom privacy might be an issue for some. While the hotel is super convenient for the airport -- and one of the cheapest options around the city -- tourists who want easy access to Edinburgh's attractions should look elsewhere. The playfully decorated Grassmarket Hotel costs about twice as much, though is affordable considering its excellent city center location.

Oyster Hotel Review

Budget chain hotel with simple contemporary interiors and no-frills vibe

Housed in a low-rise piece of boxy modern architecture, this budget incarnation of the low-cost Ibis chain is particularly no-frills both inside and out. Opened in 2014, the hotel is clean and modern throughout, with colorful -- in some cases garish -- furnishings, and smart, clean lines finished in wood veneer. The lobby lounge, where breakfast is served, has lots of counter-style seating against tall windows lining the open-plan room, which combines bright-citrus and white furnishings with an industrial-chic breakfast bar complete with chalkboard and natural wood. The overall effect is fresh, simple, and contemporary with plenty of natural light and bright, well-lit hallways. Staff are also friendly and efficient while clientele tends towards businesspeople with meetings in the area or tourists who don't mind the trip into the city.

Set in a business park on the outskirts of Edinburgh close to the airport

The hotel is located in the business park on the western outskirts of Edinburgh just off the A720 in South Gyle. Edinburgh is the home of numerous business and head offices for a range of companies as well as the Gyle Shopping Centre, located just a few minutes' drive from the hotel. About 10 minutes' walk away is Gyle Centre tram stop that connects to Edinburgh center every 10 minutes and takes just over half an hour. The location is also very convenient for Edinburgh Airport, which is five to 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes by tram.

Small simple rooms with scant amenities and possible privacy issues

The hotel has 161 rooms, all of which are pretty small. They're decorated in simple modern tones with playful white and green color schemes and wood veneer flooring. There are bright green paintings of green grass behind the beds -- a charming if somewhat childish touch. Amenities are basic, with little beyond wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with Freeview channels and media sockets in all rooms. Showers sit behind frosted glass and toilets lack sealed doors -- which might be a privacy issues for some, especially non-couples. Wi-Fi is free of charge with good coverage, though there are no toiletries beyond a bar of soap.

Free Wi-Fi, children's room, and limited parking; buffet breakfast for a fee

Being a super-budget hotel, the Ibis doesn't offer a great deal in the way of hotel amenities. There is a breakfast bar where guests can enjoy a buffet of pastries, cereal, and fruit, though it's not included in the rate. A small children's play area in the lobby lounge helps keep the little ones entertained, and free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the property. Free on-site parking is also available for up to 40 cars, which means the lot can get filled up quickly during peak times. Considering its proximity to the airport, the lack of a shuttle service is a shame. There's also a pair of vending machines selling soft drinks, snacks, and some alcoholic beverages, and a microwave for guest use.
